Opera Viva

Opera Viva is an opera performance that takes place in the Chateau Trnova which was built in 1720. Chateau Trnova is close to Zbraslav thus only 20 minutes from Prague’s city center. In the second half of the 19th century this baroque style building was reconstructed into neogothical style. It was done by its owner Vincent Danek, a famous Czech industrialist. The genius loci was mostly influenced by famous composers and singers. Inspired by the Italian Musica a Palazzo in Venice, today’s owners have decided to recommence the old musical tradition in the Chateau by Opera Viva.

In 1830 the castle was owned by the family of a famous Czech composer Frantisek Skroup who had been inspired by the local countryside to compose the song ”Kde domov muj” – “ Where is my home”, which later became the Czech national anthem. By the end of the 19th century Ema Destinova, a famous Czech opera diva, spent several summers at the chateau.

Opera Viva is a unique performance of its style in the Czech Republic, where the guests become part of the opera itself. Everything takes place in the milieu of the Chateau halls, terraces and garden. The most popular arias from world’s and Czech operas are performed by prominent Czech opera singers such as Martina Kocianova – Mezzosopranist, Anna Klamo – Sopranist, Barbora Polaskova, Gabriela Kopperova, Vratislav Kriz – soloist of the National Theatre Opera in Prague and Jakub Pribyl. The glamorous atmosphere is created by elegant costumes and the Chateau’s charming interior designed in the style of Napoleon III.

The course of the night in detail: After their arrival, the guests are served a welcome drink on the terrace while the guide of the night introduces briefly the chateau's history, followed by some interesting information regarding the aria that is to be performed (curious facts about the opera, the course of its world premiere, it’s author etc.) Suddenly, Carmen walks up the stairs to the terrace and sings the aria „Habanera“(Opera Carmen – G. Bizet), singing, she strolls among the spectators. Afterwards the guests are invited to move to the Main Hall where the guide continues the narration relating to the upcoming aria. (Don Giovanni and Zerlina Aria: “La Ci Darem la Mano“,Opera Don Giovanni – W.A. Mozart). The rest of the evening progresses the same way. The guests freely move around the castle interiors to listen to the various arias. In the Large Dining Room the aria “Non Piu Andrai“ The Marriage of Figaro - W.A.
